The Shihlu Historic Trail extends across Wufeng, Jianshih in Xinju County and reaches Yanglao Village in Jianshih from Qingquan after passing Shihlu Mountain (Xiakelo Mountain). The 37.7km-long trail used to be the main access for the local tribes in old days (The Wufeng Qingquan Sector is a paved highway today). Along the Historic Trail , there are a large number of spots for observation of maple leaves, a major attraction in autumn.
During the Japanese occupation, the Japanese were present in the mountain area through the Historic Trail and artillery posts and police stations were erected, so were garrison roads. The effort was to control the area with force and the move made the Shihlu Historic Trail , a major access road by then, fade. Remains available by the trail are the Baishih Police Station, Tiencuntai Police Station and Shihlu Police Station. A makeshift hunting hut and the Dashan Artillery Post are found in front of the Kiakelo Mountain (Shihlu) as silent witness to the heated and brave anti-Japanese stories.
The Shihlu Historic Trail is located at 1,300m~2,322m above sea level, where key plant species are hyacinth (unique in Taiwan), blue maple, Taiwanese red?? and other species. Fir woods, luanta and??? are other species. As the environment is an ideal habitat for a wide variety of animals, mammals available are Taiwanese black bear, boars, monkeys, white-faced flying squirrels, red flying squirrels and muntajacs. When it comes to birds, Taiwanese partridges, blue-belly vultures, white-ear thrushes and yellow-chest thrushes are the exclusive ones in Taiwan. A few reptiles and amphibious species are also available. Besides, there are Papilio xuthus, raven Papilio xuthus, glass Papilio xuthus and red-shoulder pink butterflies.
