  • Features of the trail: A main access road for the Paiwan population, the entire system includes the Paiwan Secret Trail, the Paiwan Old North South Historic Trail , the Kunlunao, the Jinshuiying and the Neiwenalangwei among other Historic Trail s. The Paiwan Secret Trail and the Paiwan Old North South Historic Trail are all main access roads to the Lukai Tribe people when comes to linking its branches. The Paiwan Old North South Historic Trail links Kunlunao, the Jinshuiying and the Neiwenalangwei Historic Trail s. The Kunlunao Historic Trail is the first trail built in Taiwan with the purpose of taming the aboriginal, it is also a model official trial expanded based on the marriage trail. The Jinshuiying Historic Trail used to be the mountain access linking the aboriginal tribes on the east and west of Taiwan. In the Qing Dynasty, it turned to become a taming road and was used once to emigrate the Pingpu Tribe population. During the Japanese Occupation, the trial was frequently used to tam the Paiwan Tribe people and it is the oldest cross mountain trail. The Neiwenalangwei Historic Trail is the southernmost one and one of the key access road to the Paiwan Tribe people in old days.
  • Trail routes: The Paiwan Secret Trail begins in Sandimen and it goes through Majia, Shelu, North Dawu North, Bilu Hot Spring, Jinfeng, Jialan and ends up at Taimali. The Paiwan Old North South Historic Trail begins at Wutai and it goes through Chuwu, Ali, Jiuhaocha, Shelu, Jiaping, Jiulaiyi, Lilishe, Dingdi, Nanshi and ends up at Fangshan. The Kunlunao Historic Trail stretches between Kaohsiung County and Taidong County. It begins at Fengshan (Fengshan County in old days) and goes through Chongjiaozhuang, Wushuzhouzhuang, Liangyushan, Shuangxikou, Neishe, Dashiyen, Zhuyege, hanzailun, Damaoli and ends up at the Taidong Valley (Beinanmi in old days), measuring 105km in length. The original Jinshuiying Historic Trail begins at Yuquan Village in Fangliao (Shitouying) and goes through Kantouying, Guihuamen, Jinshuiying, Chushuipo, Guzailun and ends up in Dawu in Taidong. At present most trekkers traveling by the Historic Trail s would start at Shuidiliao in Fangliao and the trip would begin at Xinkaocun. At 23Km of the forest trail, the so-called Dashulin, the road joins the old Historic Trail . The Neiwenalangwei Historic Trail begins at Nanshi and goes through Bakalukalu, Neishi village, Neiwenshe, Neimalibashe, Alangweishe and ends up at Daren.
(I) Ancient Paiwan Secret Trail

  • Length of trail: About 133km in length and part of the trip are joined by forest roads or trails.
  • Time required for the trip: Lacking trekking data on part of the line, correct trip time is not available.
  • Difficulty: As most of the trip is not properly defined or in use, only those who are familiar with the Historic Trail s are capable of making the entire trip, which is of very high difficulty to average people.

【 Management 】

  • Environmental limit: Part of the trail passes by the Maolin National Scenery Zone. Not sensitive to ecological environment.
  • Type of facility/Intensity of development: To keep the area as this is, the area should be banned from major exploration and only local repairs shall be provided to the trail at this time. When necessary, number of tourists shall be kept under control, as this is a Type 2 National Trail.
(II) Kunlunao Historic Trail

【 Type of attraction open for tourism 】

  • Length of trail: The Historic Trail stretches between Fengshan in Kaohsiung County (Fengshan County in old days) Taidong Valley (Beinanmi in old days), measuring 105km in length. Today, the only sector available is the 40km-and-odd stretch between Laiyi and Jinlun.
  • Time required for the trip: Lacking trekking data on part of the line, correct trip time is not available.
  • Difficulty: Very high difficulty.

【 Management 】

  • Environmental limit:Not sensitive to ecological environment.
  • Intensity of development/Type of facility: To keep the area as this is, the area should be banned from major exploration and only local repairs shall be provided to the trail at this time. When necessary, number of tourists shall be kept under control, as this is a Type 2 National Trail.

The Kunlunao Historic Trail used to be a mountain trail taken by families and relatives of the Paiwan Tribe and the Beinan Tribe on East and West Taiwan. In 1874, when the Mudanshe Incident took place, the Qing Dynasty administration decided to build 3 roads in northern, central and southern Taiwan with the purpose of taming the local aboriginal. The Kunlunao Historic Trail was the one in the south. Built by YUAN Wen and its engineering force and with assistance provided by the Paiwan Tribe and the Beinan Tribe, who depended on the marriage trail. The trail was built 1 year earlier than the Batonguan Historic Trail and it was actually the first taming road in Taiwan and a model marriage trail. 124 years after, except for few sectors regularly guarded by the Qing army, most of the 6m road and the stone stairs allowing passage are lost in the trees and are no where to be found.

The Kunlunao Historic Trail is located at between 200m~2,068m above sea level, where common plants are ??? and maple among others. ???in the area is an endangered species and only available in Taiwan. The enriched fauna in the area include fish species, such as??in Jinlun Creek. Mammals are Taiwanese monkeys, boars, South China skunks, civets, white-faced flying squirrels and red-belly squirrels. When it comes to birds, there are Taiwanese blue magpies, blue-belly vultures, magpies, ??, ???, white-eared thrush, crested thrush. As of reptiles, there are trimeresurus stejnegeri, ????????. In terms of amphibious, there are rain frog, toads, tree frogs and Mo’s tree frogs.

(III) Jinshuiying Historic Trail

【 Type of attraction open for tourism 】

  • Length of trail: About 47km.
  • Time required for the trip: The entire trip would take 1 to 2 days.
  • Difficulty: Low to medium difficulty. Special care is required for slippery roads during some seasons.

【 Management 】

  • Environmental limit: Part of the trip goes through key habitat to the wildlife in Jinshuiying.
  • Type of facility/Intensity of development: As the sectors in the reserve are not apt for development, number of tourists shall be kept under control, as this is a type 2 trail in the specifications of national trail systems. As other sectors are not apt for explorations and to keep the area as it is, only local repairs shall be allowed to the existing trail. When necessary, number of tourists shall be kept under strict control, this is a type 3 trail in the specifications of national trail systems.

The Jinshuiying Historic Trail begins at Shuidiliao in Fangliao, Pingdong and it travels over the Central Cordillera before ending up in Dawu in Taidong. Of 47km in total length and as it crosses the Central Cordillera Cross Mountain in the lowest point, this is the cross mountain trail of most frequent use and it is considered as one of the oldest cross mountain trails.

Located next to the stone barracks at Santiaolun of the Qing Army stationed there, the trail was referred in the local documents of the Qing Dynasty as Santiaolun. Until the late years of the Qing Dynasty, this was the only access road leading to the rear of the mountain. During the Japanese Occupation, in 1906, the Japanese rebuilt the trail in 8 opportunities and the trail was mainly used to tam the local aboriginal. As the top garrison post in the area was known as Jinshuiying, the trail was later named as Jinshuiying Cross Mountain Trail. The expanded Jinshuiying Cross Mountain Trail is almost the same as the Santiaolun Trail. Cultural remains on the trail include the Chushuipo remains, the Qing Dynasty Jinshuiying remains and the Japanese police station.

The Jinshuiying Historic Trail is located at between 200m~1,450m above sea level. The area is apt for a wide variety of flora and fauna, being the renowned one Taiwanese ???. Animales in the area include mammals, such as Taiwanese monkeys, boars, South China skunks, civets, white-faced flying squirrels and red-belly squirrels as well as stripped squirrels. When it comes to birds, there are condors, owls, yellow-bead owls, Taiwanese blue magpies, blue-belly vultures, magpies,???, white-eared thrush, crested thrush and bamboo pheasants. As of reptiles, there are trimeresurus stejnegeri, ????????. In terms of amphibious, there are rain frog, toads, tree frogs and Mo’s tree frogs.

(IV) Paiwan Jiushe North-South Historic Trail

【 Type of attraction open for tourism 】

  • Length of trail: About 133km and part of the trail is joined by forest roads or trails.
  • Time required for the trip: Lacking trekking data on part of the line, correct trip time is not available.
  • Difficulty: As most of the trial is not in use, only those who are familiar with the Historic Trail are capable of taking the entire trip, which is of very high difficulty.

【 Management 】

  • Environmental limit: Part of the trip passes through the Maolin National Scenery zone. Not sensitive to ecological environment.
  • Type of facility/Intensity of development: To keep the area as this is, the area should be banned from major exploration and only local repairs shall be provided to the trail at this time. When necessary, number of tourists shall be kept under control, as this is a Type 2 National Trail.
(V) Neiwenalangwei Historic Trail

  • Length of trail: About 30km.
  • Time required for the trip: Lacking trekking data on part of the line, correct trip time is not available.
  • Difficulty: As most of the trail is lost, taking the entire trip would be of very high difficulty.

【 Management 】

  • Environmental limit: Not sensitive to ecological environment.
  • Type of facility/Intensity of development: Major explorations shall be banned and to keep the area as it is, only local repairs shall be allowed to the trail. When necessary, number of tourists shall be kept under strict control, this is a type 2 trail in the specifications of national trail systems.
